John Critiques and Instructs Today’s Church

Author Discovers 2nd Gospel in John

(BANDERA, Texas) Imagine the disciples’ surprise when Jesus told them that He has been teaching them in figurative language (John 16:25). Intrigued by this idea, Bob Jamison researched for Book One of What Was John Thinking?, John’s instructions to the church, hidden in figurative language, in the first 11 chapters of John’s Gospel. Book One was published in the Spring of 2006.

In his figurative language text, John tells us:

  • Jesus gave each one of us one or more tasks to finish; then John gives us a sequence of steps most of us must take to finish our tasks.
  • The corporate purposes of God, and some key elements for the church to become the scriptural light of the world, the lesser light created to govern darkness.
  • Enemy strategies aimed at keeping individuals and the church from fulfilling those tasks and purposes.

In his critique of the church in figurative language, John exposes:

  • How money-changing tactics undermine many churches represented in figurative language by dove, sheep, and oxen.
  • Many churches that are sick, asleep, dead, and stinking, viewing the raising of Lazarus from the dead as an allegory.

On-line reviewer, Debra Gaynor of Reader Views, writes regarding Book One:

“Bob Jamison takes a look at the Gospel according to John and speculates on what John was thinking. What was he thinking about when he talks about the wedding feast at Cana or when he talks about Lazarus? Could it be symbolism? What message was he attempting to convey to people in our century?”

“I was intrigued by Mr. Jamison’s view of the moneychanger’s- I agree with him. Many churches leave the impression that if you attend church, give your money, take the sacrament, do some kind of work, you’ll go to heaven. Christianity is so much more than showing up, paying money and doing a good deed. Christianity is a change inside you. You can’t buy your way to heaven.”

“This book is well written. It is easy to understand and the content is of great value. Mr. Jamison has obviously spent much time meditating and studying the book of John.”

“What  Was John Thinking?” has a beautiful message. While I do not necessarily agree with all of the symbolism, I do agree with the points Mr. Jamison makes. I found myself looking more closely at John. I asked myself if all these years I missed some of the meaning behind what John wrote. I have always taken the Bible literally. This book has caused me to ponder and think a little deeper. We should all think a little deeper.”

Book Two of What Was John Thinking? begins in John Chapter 11 after the raising of Lazarus. It is currently being written and interprets Jesus’ teachings and actions in greater detail than is found in Book One. John gave us the substance of what took place in the life of Jesus, for readers to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. He left it to others to fill in the details and interpret the figurative language.

Book Two focuses on the preparation of His disciples for the continuity of His work after He departs, to begin the building of His church, His body. Chapter 1 of Book Two is titled “Change of Direction”. Jesus knew that the hour of His death was near.

In Chapter 2, titled, “We Wish to See Jesus”, Jesus gave the disciples their primary goal: Be glorified, reveal Jesus to the world, represented by the Greeks in John Chapter 12. Through the achievement of this first goal, their second goal, fruitfulness in accomplishing the work for which He sent them, would follow.

Chapter 3, titled, “Love One Another” presents the most important element in achieving the two goals described in Chapter 2. In the washing of His disciples feet, Jesus teaches that the message of loving one another begins with and is central to the sacrament of Baptism. “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me” (John 13:8).

In Chapter 4, the reader will be taken into the heavenlies, the kingdom of heaven and enter into our Father’s house (John 14:2), New Jerusalem, and re-discover the beautiful biblical concept about truth being both now and ultimate.

"This book is food for the soul; as it takes the reader through each chapter of the Gospel revealing Jesus and making Him relevant to life today. Reading these pages; it beckoned me to explore neglected pathways of truth, and above all, I was inspired to worship the lord who is magnified in every page."
